Here are some of JD’s photos from our trip to LA. My work is in a show called “Winter is Coming” with Meredith Dittmar and Melissa Moss at Lab 101 in Culver City. Meredith, JD and I traveled from Portland to visit friends and attend the opening.
On Thursday, we flew down to LA and spent some time at the gallery checking in and figuring out how to arrange our work, and then jumped into the flow of LA. Meredith has a great crew of friends there, and JD and I had fun meeting them.
We stayed one night with a friend in Topanga. I used to carry a Topanga print in the Morningcraft shop a few years ago, and it was great to connect that name with the actual place. Its a really unique contrast to LA and it smells fantastic.
On Friday, we visited the Eames house and the new Broad building at the LACMA. I really enjoyed seeing the Jeff Koons’ work in person, the experience of seeing it in person is so much more than seeing a photo can convey. The surfaces are perfect and reflective; they are always changing. We also saw some Damien Hurst pieces, timely with the auction going on this past week.
The day finished up with a visit to Silverlake. I peeked in the window of Reform School, it wasn’t open because we were there at night, but it looks great, even in the dark. We stopped for a tea and coffee at Intelligentsia, where JD and the barista talked about Stumptown. They have a fantastic tiled floor. No photos of that, but its worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood.
On Saturday we slept in and then got into the nitty gritty with Venice and the beach before heading to the opening.
Before we left town on Sunday, we rounded out our trip with takeout wings from Bayou in Inglewood.
